What this page is, and is not

Sciatica is a medical symptom with several possible causes, and it needs a doctor's assessment. ThermoCare does not diagnose it, does not treat its cause, and will not ask you to stop any medical treatment.

What does sciatica actually feel like?

People describe sciatica differently from ordinary back pain. It is often less of a dull ache and more of a line: a burning, shooting or electric sensation that runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of one leg, sometimes as far as the foot.

It usually affects one side. Sitting for long periods, coughing or sneezing can sharpen it, and some people notice numbness or pins and needles alongside the pain rather than instead of it.

Should I see a doctor about sciatica?

Yes, and this is the first thing we would say to anyone calling about it. Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and its causes range from the mild to the genuinely urgent. A doctor needs to establish what is behind it.

If you have already been assessed, bring what you were told with you: the diagnosis, any scan report, the medicines you are on, and any movements you have been advised to avoid. The practitioner works within those limits.

How can ThermoCare help with sciatica-related discomfort?

What we offer is supportive comfort care for the muscular tension and general discomfort that often accompanies sciatica, not treatment of the nerve problem itself.

Sessions are gentle and slow. Nothing is pushed through pain, no aggressive stretching is applied to the affected leg, and the practitioner checks in continuously. If a position or pressure makes the radiating pain worse, we stop and change approach.

Some people find spine care support and gentle massage helpful for the surrounding tightness; others prefer acupuncture, where no sustained pressure is applied to the area at all.

What happens in a first visit?

Allow around 45 to 60 minutes. The visit opens with a detailed conversation: when it started, exactly where the pain travels, what makes it better or worse, what your doctor has said, and what you have been advised against.

The practitioner then explains what the session will and will not involve before anything begins, and you can pause or stop at any point. If what you describe suggests you need medical assessment before any therapy, we will tell you that instead of booking you in.

What are the common signs of sciatica?

These are descriptions people commonly give, listed so you can recognise what you are experiencing. They are not a checklist for diagnosing yourself, and only a doctor can tell you what is causing them.

  • Pain travelling from the lower back into the buttock and down one leg
  • Burning, shooting or electric-feeling pain rather than a dull ache
  • Numbness or pins and needles in the leg or foot
  • Discomfort that worsens on sitting, coughing or sneezing
  • Weakness in the affected leg
Safety comes first

When to see a doctor instead

Supportive therapy should never delay assessment for severe, sudden, worsening or unexplained symptoms.

Questions about sciatica

If your question is not covered here, ask us before making a booking.

No. ThermoCare does not diagnose any medical condition. If you have not been assessed by a doctor, please start there. What we offer is supportive comfort-focused therapy, which some people choose alongside medical care.

No. We make no claim that acupuncture cures sciatica or resolves its cause. Some people choose it as supportive comfort care alongside medical treatment, and that is how we offer it.

It depends entirely on the cause, which is why medical assessment comes first. When it is appropriate, work is gentle, avoids pushing through pain, and stops if the radiating symptoms increase.

Tell us that when you book, and bring the report and any movement restrictions you were given. The practitioner will work within those limits, and will decline the session if it would not be appropriate.

Not aggressively, and never through pain. Anything involving the affected leg is done slowly, within a comfortable range, and stopped the moment symptoms increase.

We will not quote a number for a condition a doctor is managing. We begin with one visit, see how you respond, and discuss it honestly from there.

Not sure whether this is right for you?

Call and describe what you are experiencing. If you should see a doctor first, we will tell you that instead of booking you in.
